The bass baritone Ruben Drole was born in Switzerland in 1980 to a Slovenian father and a Spanish mother. He studied with Jane Thorner Mengedoht at the Zurich Conservatory of Music and began his career in 2004 at Zurich Opera, of whose ensemble he is still a member. At Zurich he has taken on Mozart roles as Papageno in The Magic Flute, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, and the title part in Le nozze di Figaro, as well as Baroque repertoire and roles in operas by Janáček, Schreker, and Weill. He worked regularly with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who also engaged him for the styriarte festival. Drole has appeared at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Salzburg Festival, the Dresden Semper Opera, the Theater an der Wien, and the Spoleto Festival in the United States. Such conductors as William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Ton Koopman, and Franz Welser-Möst have engaged him for projects in the concert hall and opera house.
