The Austrian baritone Markus Werba studied at the Klagenfurt Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, with Robert Holl, Walter Berry, and Gerhard Kahry among his teachers. He launched his career at the Wiener Volksoper and has been working as a freelance artist since 2000, performing at the Bavarian, Berlin, and Vienna Staatsoper companies; the Opéra national de Paris; La Scala Milan; and Los Angeles Opera. His signature role is Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, which he has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and Salzburg Festival, among others. His repertoire ranges from Baroque works and bel canto operas to Beckmesser in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Ravel’s L’Heure espagnole. In May 2025, he will appear as a guest artist at La Scala in Milan in Weill’s Happy End. Werba additionally focuses on art song.
