The tenor Thomas Ebenstein, who hails from Carinthia, studied at the Vienna University of Music with Helena Łazarska and Robert Holl. He began his career at the Komische Oper Berlin and has been a member of the Vienna Staatsoper ensemble since 2012, appearing there in 2023 as Aegisth in Strauss’s Elektra, Monostatos in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, and L’Aumônier in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites. His concert repertoire ranges from Schütz, Bach, Mozart, and Schubert to Bruckner and Elgar. He has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall in New York, La Scala in Milan, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as in Paris, Dresden, and Geneva, at the Vienna Festival, and at the festivals in Verbier and Hong Kong. He is singing Dr. Cajus in Verdi’s Falstaff at this year’s Salzburg Festival. Thomas Ebenstein focuses intensively on the art song and in 2018 released an album of lieder by Schoenberg, Zemlinsky, Strauss, and Korngold.
