Sabine Meyer

A native of Crailsheim, Sabine Meyer completed her clarinet training with Otto Hermann in Stuttgart and with Hans Deinzer in Hanover and began her artistic career playing in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. After a brief period she gave up an engagement as principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic in order to focus exclusively on solo work. During her career of more than thirty years since then, Meyer has performed in all the music centers of Europe, South America, the United States, Israel, Canada, Japan, and Australia. She has concertized with the major orchestras of our time, including the Vienna and London Philharmonics, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. She is deeply committed to chamber music, participating in various ensembles with such artists as Heinrich Schiff, and Gidon Kremer, Oleg Maisenberg, Leif Ove Andsnes, and Fazil Say; and with the Hagen Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, and the Quatuor Modigliani. In 1983, together with her husband Reiner Wehle and her brother Wolfgang Meyer, Sabine Meyer founded the Trio di Clarone, which performs works by Mozart and contemporary composers. In this ensemble she is particularly committed to the work of Jean Françaix, Edison Denissov, Toshio Hosokawa, Manfred Trojahn, Aribert Reimann, and Peter Eötvös. Meyer has won numerous awards for her recordings, including no fewer than eight ECHO Klassik awards. She has received the Brahms Award and the Praetorius Music Award of Lower Saxony and has been honored with membership in the order Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and Germany’s Order of Merit, First Class. Since 1993 Sabine Meyer has taught at the Lübeck Academy of Music. In 2013 she published her biography Weltstar mit Herz.
