Founded in 1992, the Lucerne Kantorei, which comprises the Lucerne Boys’ Choir and the Lucerne Girls’ Choir, offers children from Central Switzerland an opportunity to have their voices trained and to sing in a professionally conducted choir. Members receive individual training according to their age level, which includes weekly private instruction in voice. This work takes place through basic and advanced choirs; there are a large concert choir, a chamber choir, and a “gentlemen’s ensemble” for 14- to 20-year-old singers whose voices have broken. The main focus of their repertoire is on sacred works of all eras, which are performed during the services held at the Jesuitenkirche as well as at choral concerts and celebratory occasions and on concert tours. The various Lucerne Kantorei groups have performed at Lucerne Festival, at the Young Artists in Concert in Davos, and at the Bregenz Festival; selected boy soloists regularly sing on the opera stages of Switzerland and neighboring countries. Eberhard Rex has been Artistic Director of the Lucerne Kantorei since 2000. He studied church music at the Musikhochschule in Trossingen (Baden-Württemberg), becoming involved during his studies with pedagogy and children’s vocal training — a focus that he put into practice as Choral Director of the renowned Aurelius Boys’ Choir in Calw and with ARTEvocale, the Girls’ Choir in Calw. He has also conducted opera and oratorio projects and has made various recordings.
