The drum-player and percussionist Lucas Niggli, who was born in 1968 in Cameroon, works on the borderlines of improvised and composed music. He has undertaken concert tours around the globe and to numerous renowned festivals, with musical partners that have included/include Tim Berne, John Cale, Pierre Favre, Flea, Fred Frith, Barry Guy, Elliott Sharp, Erika Stucky, Michael Wertmüller, Xu Fengxia, and Peter Conradin Zumthor. He performs in a duo with the singer Andreas Schaerer and in a trio with Luciano Biondini and Michel Godard. Together with Marino Pliakas and Dominik Blum he has formed the trio Steamboat Switzerland since 1995 and, with Aly Keïta and Jan Galega Brönnimann, the ensemble Kalo Yele. Niggli’s discography numbers 50 CDs, including 17 albums as leader and composer. A teacher at the University of the Arts in Zurich, Niggli is also active as a producer of concerts and festivals.
