The Peruvian-American mezzo-soprano Kelly Newberry was born in Simi Valley, California, and studied with Jane Randolph at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; at the Bard College Conservatory she completed the Vocal Arts Program directed by Dawn Upshaw, who also selected her for this evening’s debut at LUCERNE FESTIVAL. Kelly Newberry’s repertoire includes such Mozart roles as the Second Lady in The Magic Flute and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, as well as Amastre in Handel’s Serse. In March 2016 she performed the role of Jennie in the New York premiere of Oliver Knussen’s Higglety Pigglety Pop!. Under Ragnar Bohlin, the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, she took part in a performance of Duruflé’s Requiem. As a winner of the Colburn Fellowship, she was a participant in SongFest, working there with Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, Susanne Mentzer, and Graham Johnson.
