The American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, who was born in Rome, Georgia, in 1981, studied at Shorter College in her home town and at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. She won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 2007, the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 2013, the Richard Tucker Award in 2015, and the Beverly Sills Artist Award in 2017. She has made guest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Bavarian Staatsoper, and Deutsche Oper Berlin. Her repertoire ranges from Handel and Wagner to Jake Heggie. In 2019, Barton was a star guest at the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. In the 2024-25 season, she will sing Azucena in Verdi’s Il trovatore at the Met and Baba the Turk in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Opéra national de Paris. Her recordings include the album All Who Wander, which won the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award.
