Born in 1987 in Lugo near Ravenna, countertenor Carlo Vistoli initially studied piano, guitar, and musicology in Bologna. Along the way, he undertook vocal training with William Matteuzzi and then attended Sonia Prina’s class in Baroque singing at the Girolamo Frescobaldi Conservatory in Ferrara; he also attended master classes with Monica Bacelli, Romina Basso, Marijana Mijanović, and Sara Mingardo. Sir John Eliot Gardiner engaged Vistoli in 2017 for his Monteverdi project, in which the three surviving operas were performed in many major European cities and in the United States to celebrate the composer’s 450th birthday. As Ottone, Vistoli also participated in a new production of Monteverdi’s Poppea conducted by Christie at the Salzburg Festival in 2018. Other engagements have taken him to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as Idraspe in Cavalli’s Erismena, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice as Ruggiero in Vivaldi's Orlando furioso, and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma as Gluck’s Orfeo. With Gardiner, he has performed in Handel’s Semele in Barcelona, Paris, and Rome and at Milan's Teatro alla Scala; he has toured Europe with Joyce DiDonato in Handel’s Agrippina under the baton of Maxim Emelyanychev, appearing in Luxembourg, London, Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris. Carlo Vistoli can be heard in a new production of Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di anima e di corpo at the Theater an der Wien in September 2021, and in May 2022 he will take on the role of Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in a series of performances at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, conducted by Philippe Jaroussky.
