Patricia Kopatchinskaja became aware of the American composer Michael Hersch quite by chance while surfing the internet on a sleepless night. His music captivated her immediately. So she contacted Hersch and commissioned a violin concerto, which Gramophone magazine describes as a “musical battle of life and death.”
